What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects the tissues that surround and support your teeth.  Symptoms include bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth or receding gums. Symptoms include redness, swelling or bleeding gums; bad breath; loose teeth; receding gums; persistent sore throat or earaches; a change in bite alignment (such as having to open your mouth wider than usual); and bone loss around the root of a tooth. Gum disease is a serious condition that can lead to tooth loss if not treated properly and in a timely manner. It’s important to get treatment for this condition as soon as possible so you can avoid further damage and pain later on down the road.

Causes of gum disease include poor oral hygiene, pregnancy hormones (which cause an increase in estrogen), smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco products. Hereditary and age factors can also increase the risk for gum disease like receding gum lines near one’s smile line due to thinning bone density that often occurs during adulthood but can occur earlier on in childhood as well.
