Are there elements about your smile that bother you? Have you ever wished your smile looked different? Many people are finding that porcelain veneers are the solution they have been looking for. Veneers allow you to cover up imperfections and finally have the smile you have always desired.

The procedure to receive veneers is relatively simple and can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile! If you are ready to improve your smile, veneers may be the solution for you.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance.

Though veneers are available using porcelain or resin, porcelain is the preferred option because it is a better material for resisting stains. Proper oral hygiene is still necessary, but porcelain veneers are less likely to become discolored.

It’s also important to note that veneers are not the same as implants. Your natural tooth acts as a base, and the veneer is attached to it. The veneer is very thin, so it does not bulge out.

Veneers can help improve the aesthetics of your smile in multiple ways, including:

    • Resin Fillings or Composite Bonding Discoloration – Over time, resin fillings may become stained along the line where the natural tooth meets the resin. This loss of seamlessness gives the filled tooth a worn, unnatural appearance.
    • Worn Down Teeth – Teeth may appear smaller over time. This is because of erosion, grinding, and abrasion.
    • Chipped or Broken Teeth – Veneers can quickly conceal damaged teeth, renewing uniformity.
    • Irregular Shaping and Size – Teeth that are uneven or irregular in size and placement can be improved upon with the application of porcelain veneers.
    • Gaps – This cosmetic enhancement allows those with gaps or spaces between teeth to experience a full, and uniform smile.

Am I a candidate for veneers?

The first step in getting veneers is consulting with a dentist, who will determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. Some factors to take in to consideration are:

-The condition of your teeth: If your teeth are in good overall health, you may be a good candidate for veneers. However, if you have gum disease or other dental problems, you may not be a good candidate.

-The size and shape of your teeth: Veneers can change the size and shape of your teeth. If you have small or misshapen teeth, veneers may be a good option for you.

-The color of your teeth: If you have stained or discolored teeth, veneers can help improve their appearance.

-Your bite: If you have a misaligned bite, veneers can help correct it.

Some factors that may exclude you from being a good candidate for veneers are:

-Poor oral health: Oral infections and tooth decay can prevent people from getting veneers. Those who cannot get veneers might be good candidates for another cosmetic option.

-Teeth grinding and clenching: Though durable, it is possible for veneers to crack or chip. If you are a heavy teeth grinder or if you have damaged your teeth from clenching your jaw, you may need to address these issues before you can receive veneers.

What does the procedure include?

Porcelain veneers involve a cosmetic dentistry procedure in which a covering is placed over the outside (visible area) of the tooth. Veneers are usually only applied to the part of the tooth that is visible when talking or smiling.

To ensure your new set of veneers look as natural as possible, Dr. Goodman at Desert Valley Dental in Reno removes a small layer of enamel from the tooth surface. This also allows the veneers to bond to the teeth more securely. Next, a bonding paste is applied to the prepared teeth. A light beam activates the paste and cements the veneers in place. The entirety of this process is completed over two appointments. Porcelain veneers are a simple and streamlined process, especially compared to other more invasive and extensive procedures.

After the procedure, you may experience some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This is normal and should go away within a few days. You should also avoid eating hard or sticky foods for at least 24 hours.

Are veneers permanent?

No, veneers are not technically permanent, though you would need a dentist to remove or replace them if necessary. Veneers are long-lasting and can remain in good condition for 10 – 20 years before they need to be updated. With proper care, they can last even longer.
