Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about this dental appliance so you can decide if it’s time to talk to your dentist about getting dentures!
What are dentures?
A denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and can even enhance the look of your smile.
There are two types of dentures – complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the patient’s teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it also prevents other teeth from shifting.
A complete denture can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed (usually takes 4 to 6 weeks). During this time, the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures often the more popular choice because they are made in advance and are immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments are made to ensure proper fit and comfort.
What oral health problems do dentures solve?
Dentures are primarily used to replace missing teeth. When you have missing teeth, your ability to speak and chew is compromised. Not to mention the fact that having missing teeth will often negatively impact your overall appearance and self-esteem. Additionally, your teeth also play an important role in supporting your lips and cheeks. When you lose teeth, it can cause your face to sag and make you look older than you really are! Dentures are a solution to all of these issues.
In addition to improving your appearance, dentures can also help to improve your oral health. They prevent food from collecting in the spaces where your teeth are missing, which can lead to gum disease and other serious health problems. And perhaps most importantly, having dentures can help you chew and speak properly again!
How do I know if I need dentures?
If you have lost all or most of your natural teeth, you will likely need dentures. However, even if you have only lost a few teeth, you may still benefit from partial dentures.
There are a few things that you can look out for that may indicate that you need dentures, including:
-You have trouble chewing or speaking
-You are missing teeth
-Your teeth are loose or shifting
-You have chronic bad breath
-You have pain in your jaw
If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is time to talk to your dentist about whether or not dentures are right for you. Your dentist will be able to assess your individual needs and make the best recommendations for you.
What does getting dentures involve?
The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-on” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.
As you are getting used to your new dentures, it is normal to experience increased saliva flow, slight soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty. The good news is that this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures!
Are dentures hard to care for?
No, dentures are not hard to care for. You should brush them daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive denture cleanser to remove food deposits and plaque. Be sure to clean your tongue, gums, and roof of your mouth as well. Your dentist will also likely recommend that you soak your dentures in a denture solution overnight.
Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear. It is important to handle them carefully as they can break if dropped.
When you get your new dentures, you will be given care instructions. Properly cleaning and caring for them, along with maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.
